The signal
Consistent listings are the first of the five AEO signals in Bay Area AEO's model: name, hours and address matching on Google, Bing, Apple Maps and Yelp. The agency's Entity & Listing Cleanup service exists for this signal. It makes a business's name and hours, its services and other details consistent everywhere AI looks, because AI pulls facts from all of those places.
The index as a matrix
The index is a simple grid: fields down the side, platforms across the top, and a mark in each cell for match or mismatch against the business's confirmed facts. Niche platforms join the core four where the niche page names them, such as reservation platforms for restaurants or Mindbody and ClassPass for studios.
| Field | Checked on | If it does not match |
|---|---|---|
| Business name | Every platform | Mentions split across variants; wrong-business mix-ups |
| Hours | Every platform, holiday hours included | Customers sent to a closed door |
| Address and service area | Maps platforms, site | Missed on neighborhood and city questions |
| Phone | Every platform | Calls lost after a recommendation |
| Categories | Google, Bing, Apple Maps, Yelp | Missed on service questions |
| Services and attributes | Profiles and site | Missed on constrained questions such as language or insurance |
Niche fields
Several niche pages add fields of their own. Restaurants keep hours, holiday closures, price range and cuisine identical across Google, Yelp, Apple Maps, Bing and OpenTable or Resy. Coffee shops fill in Wi-Fi, outlets, seating, accessibility, outdoor space and dog policy. Plumbers state emergency availability and hours consistently on the website and every listing. Mortgage brokers display individual and company NMLS numbers that match across all profiles.
These fields are exactly what the constrained panel questions ask about. “Emergency plumber in San Jose open on Sunday” is answered from the hours and emergency fields; “Coffee shop in Sunnyvale with good Wi-Fi” from the amenity attributes.
How the index explains the readings
The index sits behind two of the four readings. A mismatch on hours or services shows up as an outdated or wrong statement in description accuracy. A mismatch on name or category shows up as a gap in mention rate, often on one platform only, which the platform breakdown makes visible. When the index is clean, the readings tend to agree across platforms.
The fastest signal to move
Listing and data fixes can start showing up in AI answers within a few weeks, because many assistants pull live information. That makes this index the first place the observatory looks after work begins, and the first place it expects to see answers change.
The reference property treats the same subject as entity and listing consistency.
Running the index
The index is filled in from the business's confirmed facts. The owner confirms the name, hours, address, phone, categories and services once, holiday schedules included. Each platform's listing is then read and compared field by field. Every mismatch gets a cell in the grid and a note on what the listing says instead, and the cell clears when the listing is corrected and the change has been accepted by the platform.
Duplicates are part of the check. A second Google profile from a past move, or an old Yelp page under a former name, can feed an assistant a competing set of facts. The index records duplicates as their own row so they can be merged or closed.
Reaching voice assistants
Voice assistants such as Siri draw on the same listing data, so a clean index also governs what a spoken answer says. Apple Maps sits among the core four platforms for this reason. When the grid is clear on all four, the business reads the same whether a customer types the question or asks it aloud.
