Why neighborhoods get their own panel
In a dense market an assistant narrows a question by place. Ask for “the best birria in East San Jose” or “a contractor in Almaden Valley for a kitchen remodel,” as the San Jose page puts it, and the answer comes back with two or three names. The neighborhood decides the shortlist. A panel that only asks citywide questions would miss the moment where most local choices are made.
Bay Area AEO's city pages list the neighborhoods and districts that matter in each place, from Railroad Square in Santa Rosa to Redwood Shores in Redwood City. This observatory uses those lists as the neighborhood vocabulary for its panels.
San Francisco's eighteen
San Francisco's location page names eighteen neighborhoods: Mission District, SoMa, Financial District, North Beach, Chinatown, Marina, Pacific Heights, Hayes Valley, Castro, Noe Valley, Haight-Ashbury, Richmond District, Sunset District, Bernal Heights, Dogpatch, Potrero Hill, Nob Hill and Russian Hill. The page describes the city as dozens of distinct neighborhoods packed into 49 square miles, and notes that customers there ask detailed, neighborhood-specific questions. Its documented panel includes “Best burrito in the Mission District” and “Startup lawyer in SoMa for a seed round.”

How a neighborhood question is observed
When a panel question names a neighborhood, the observation records two extra details. The first is whether the assistant kept the neighborhood in its answer or widened it to the whole city. The second is which sources tied the named businesses to that neighborhood: a listing address, a local guide, a review that mentions the area, or the business's own page.
Both details point to work a business can do. If the assistant widened the question, the neighborhood signal is thin. If a competitor appears because a neighborhood guide mentions it, the trusted-mentions indicator shows where to look next.
Keeping local wording intact
Customers say “the Sunset,” “Temescal” and “Bay Farm Island,” and the panel keeps those exact forms. Some names carry their own markers, such as “Telegraph / Southside” in Berkeley or “Bay Point (nearby)” on the Pittsburg page. The panel stores what the customer would type, because that is the string the assistant receives.
