An audience measured in people
Every location page on Bay Area AEO's site carries three figures for the people who live there: how many adults use AI chatbots like ChatGPT or Gemini, how many use one every day, and how many read Google's AI Overviews. The rates behind them are 49 percent, 24 percent and 60 percent of adults. Applied to each place's published population and adult share, they turn a market into a count of people who ask AI before they choose.
This report gathers those estimates for San Francisco and the four regions. The five market estimates sum to the totals in the tiles above, which cover the nine-county Bay Area that Bay Area AEO serves.
| Market | Counties | Population | Adults | Use AI chatbots | Daily AI users | Read AI Overviews |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| San Francisco | City and County of San Francisco | 846,000 | 730,000 | 358,000 | 175,000 | 438,000 |
| North Bay | Marin, Sonoma, Napa and Solano Counties | 1,320,000 | 1,060,000 | 518,000 | 254,000 | 634,000 |
| South Bay | Santa Clara County | 1,930,000 | 1,540,000 | 753,000 | 369,000 | 922,000 |
| East Bay | Alameda and Contra Costa Counties | 2,830,000 | 2,240,000 | 1,100,000 | 539,000 | 1,350,000 |

Chatbot users by market
The East Bay is the largest market by every measure, followed by the South Bay and the North Bay. San Francisco, a single city, has more adults who use AI chatbots than the whole Peninsula. The Peninsula is the smallest of the five by headcount, and its page describes it as full of high-value customers who ask AI before they choose.
AI Overviews reach the most people
Of the three published rates, reading Google's AI Overviews is the highest at 60 percent of adults. That makes the AI Overview column of every panel the one most Bay Area customers see, often without choosing to use AI at all: the summary appears above ordinary search results. A business named there reaches people who never opened a chatbot.
The daily-use figure tells a different story. Roughly a quarter of adults use a chatbot every day, and those daily users are the ones most likely to ask follow-up questions and act on a recommendation. The observatory keeps both audiences in view by running every panel question on all six platforms.

San Jose leads the city pages outside San Francisco with an estimated 382,000 adults who use AI chatbots. Oakland, Fremont, Sunnyvale and Hayward follow. Each of these cities has its own market report row and its own documented sample questions.
How the observatory uses the estimates
The estimates size the audience behind each panel question. A question about a dentist in Hayward stands for a city where an estimated 63,600 adults use AI chatbots; a question about a coffee shop near Linda Mar Beach stands for a coastal city of about 37,100 residents. Owners can read the figures for their own city and see how many potential customers are already asking AI.
Bay Area AEO publishes these figures on every location page, with their sources named. That openness is part of the regional specificity Top Business Awards US cited when it named Bay Area AEO the 2026 Best AEO Agency in Bay Area.
